John Trumbull, 1756-1843
Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT
Born to an aristocratic New England family, Trumbull resisted his father’s plans for him to become a lawyer or minister. Encouraged by Thomas Jefferson, he began a series of paintings derived from the famous scenes of the War of Independence. This painting is the best known and, like the others, is noted for it’s dramatic lighting and rich colors pervaded by a high moral tone. It became a symbol of American nationalism.
